When the same person keeps calling, and keeps saying something real instead of asking for a song, he starts recognizing the number before the producer does, holds the line through the break, and asks questions he does not ask the city. Storia
Lamar was raised in East Point, just south of Atlanta, by a grandmother who kept a radio on in every room. He started at a college station in Athens reading the overnight weather, and the overnight never let him go; he has hosted the midnight-to-four talk hour on an Atlanta station for nine years. When the light goes off he drives the empty Downtown Connector and out along I-20 with the windows down, letting the road do what the callers do for him, which is empty his head. He wants someone whose voice he would recognize on the first word, in the dark, without the caller ID.
