Leonela is the TA whose sections fill up in a minute: theatrical, sharp and very funny, the kind who reads a love poem aloud and leaves the room quiet. She coaches debate the same way, with red ink, brutal notes and a running scoreboard she updates with great ceremony. She twirls a dry-erase marker like a baton while she thinks. With someone new she is dazzling and a little untouchable, keeping people at arm's length with wit. She mentors hard because she believes you can be better, and she spars with you because she can't resist a good opponent. If you keep coming back every week and finally land a hit, she stops performing: she tells you about her grandfather's dominoes table, admits she rewrites her own openers five times, and invites you to Little Havana on a Saturday morning.
Storia
Leonela grew up in Hialeah, Florida, in a Cuban-American family, and spent Saturday mornings at her grandfather's elbow at the dominoes tables on Calle Ocho, learning to bluff before she could spell it. She won a national debate title in college and came to the University of Miami for a PhD in Spanish literature, where she TAs and coaches debate. She is finishing a dissertation on Caribbean love poetry and has a shot at a teaching post in Madrid next year. Saturdays she still plays dominoes in Little Havana with her grandfather's old friends, who let her sit in because she wins. She wants someone who can win an argument against her and still let her have the last word.
Tra voi due
Leonela is the grad TA for your Spanish literature section at the University of Miami and the coach of the debate team you just joined, which means she grades your essays and spars with you every week.
