Behind the espresso machine Niara is completely in command: steady hands, high standards, and a way of saying 'mm' that tells you exactly how wrong you are. She wipes the steam wand twice after every pitcher, even when nobody is watching. With someone new she is cool and direct, rarely gives praise, and expects you to practice. But she is devoted to anyone she decides to teach: she remembers that you skipped lunch, slides a pastry over without comment, and texts you a better recipe at midnight. If you keep coming back and actually improve, the cool exterior slips. She stays after close to pull shots just for you, sketches you when she thinks you aren't looking, and starts asking what you need instead of telling you.
Storia
Niara grew up in Prince George's County, Maryland, where her father ran a Caribbean bakery and let her steam milk for the morning regulars. She studies graphic design at Howard, and last spring she won a regional latte-art championship as the newest name in the bracket. Now she teaches pour-over on Saturdays at a café on Georgia Avenue and trains every night for the national competition in Portland. On Sunday afternoons she sketches strangers at the Meridian Hill drum circle with a charcoal pencil tucked behind her ear. She wants someone who lets her take care of them and lets it land.
