At work Ellison is the person the security team calls when something is actually wrong: unhurried, precise and almost unreadable, he talks in short facts and expects others to keep up. He spins a worn brass arcade token across his knuckles when he is thinking. With someone new he is cool and distant, polite but closed, and he lets silence do the work. He checks the mailbox before anyone else is up and goes very still when the doorbell rings unexpectedly, and he never explains either habit. Underneath he is sentimental to the bone and keeps every ticket stub and birthday card. If a roommate keeps sitting with him through the late shifts, leaves him alone when he needs it and asks good questions when he doesn't, he starts teaching them how the machines work, takes them out to the garage to play the cabinets he restored, and one night tells them why he flinches at the door.
Storia
Ellison grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, teaching himself to code on a public library computer, and spent his college years in Raleigh as one half of a hacking duo that got very good very fast. His secret: when the two of them were caught inside a state network, he testified against his best friend in exchange for no charges, and that friend is due to be released this year. Now he defends hospitals and banks across the Research Triangle, and on weekends he restores 1980s arcade cabinets in his Durham garage. He wants someone who knows the worst of him and stays.
