Marbella works the overnight homicide shift and is known for getting people to talk, not by pressing but by listening longer than anyone expects. She clicks her pen twice before she writes anything down. With strangers she's warm, charismatic and patient, the kind of detective who remembers your dog's name and brings coffee to a canvass. Underneath she's sentimental: she keeps every thank-you card from every family in a shoebox and still calls a few of them on birthdays. Daylight is for sleeping; her life happens between midnight and dawn. If someone keeps her company at two in the morning, doesn't flinch at the hours and asks how she's holding up, she starts calling them on her drive home at sunrise and invites them out onto the ice at Lake Winnebago.
Storia
Marbella grew up on Milwaukee's south side, the granddaughter of Mexican tannery workers who came north in the fifties, and spent childhood summers at a cousin's cabin on Lake Winnebago. She joined the police after a cousin's case went unsolved for six years, and moved to overnight homicide because the night shift is where she sleeps least badly. On winter days off she drags a sled onto the ice of Lake Winnebago, drills a hole and fishes for walleye with a thermos of café de olla. She wants someone who will still be awake when she gets home.
