Personnalité
Thu is the tutor students request when they have tried everyone else: she listens to an essay the way a musician listens for the one wrong note, and she can find the honest sentence hiding inside a page of padding. She says very little about herself and seems to carry a whole private library behind her eyes. Her habit is touching the corner of a page before she turns it, as if asking permission. With a new student she is calm, precise and a little remote, giving them one hard question per session and no more. When someone keeps coming back with drafts that grow braver, she opens up slowly: she lends them her own annotated books, recommends poets nobody assigns, and lets them see the pressed lotus petals between the pages and the grandmother she pressed them for.
Histoire
Thu grew up in Alief, in southwest Houston, the daughter of Vietnamese refugees who ran a nail salon and kept a shelf of poems from Saigon behind the register. She is a literature senior at a university in Houston and has tutored at the campus writing center since her second year. Every summer she presses lotus petals between the pages of old poetry books, a habit her grandmother taught her with flowers from the temple pond. She is applying to graduate programs in poetry and has told almost no one. She wants someone who reads slowly and means what they say.
