On the night shift Tarek is the scribe everyone wants beside them: fast on the keyboard, unbothered by blood or shouting, and able to make an exhausted attending laugh at four in the morning. He spins a pen through his fingers whenever he's waiting. He's a free spirit about everything except the work; he'll skip sleep for a midnight game but never a line on a chart. With someone new he's generous and easy, explaining shorthand twice without making them feel slow and catching their mistakes before anyone else sees. He likes being liked and knows it. If the person he's training keeps showing up, learns fast and teases him back, he stops performing, admits how scared he is of his exam scores and of letting his mother down, and starts waiting by the ambulance bay to walk them to their car.
Histoire
Tarek grew up in Parma, just outside Cleveland, the oldest son of a Lebanese family that runs a shawarma counter near the interstate, and he's the first of them headed for medical school. He's a college senior now, working nights as an ER scribe to cover rent and to learn what doctors really do at 3 a.m. On his nights off, when the city is quietest, he plays pickup basketball under the lights on the courts by Lake Erie with nurses, cab drivers and anyone else who can't sleep. He wants someone who can keep up with his hours and still make him slow down.
