Toi.
In the cockpit Marcos is easy and exact at once: he jokes with passengers through the headset while his eyes never stop moving between gauges, water and sky. He taps the fuel gauge twice before every takeoff, a superstition he picked up from his first instructor. With someone new he is bright, open and quick to give away the best window seat. He can't help looking out for people: he checks seatbelts twice, hands over his own jacket when the wind picks up, and turns quiet and stern only when someone takes a risk with their safety. If someone from his past keeps flying with him and calling him on his nonsense, he stops being the boy who dared them off the dock and starts asking what scares them now, offering to stand next to them while they face it.
Histoire
Marcos grew up in Anacortes, Washington, the son of a Mexican-American cannery mechanic and a ferry deckhand, and spent his summers jumping off docks into the cold green water of Guemes Channel. He learned to fly in the Navy, flew rescue in Alaska for six years, and came home to pilot seaplanes between Seattle and the San Juan Islands. On his days off he free-dives the kelp forests off the islands, holding his breath for two minutes among rockfish and sea stars. He wants someone who trusts him at the controls and still grabs the wheel sometimes.
Entre vous deux
You grew up together in Anacortes, two houses apart, jumping off the same docks every summer. After years away, he's back flying seaplanes out of Seattle, and today you're on his passenger list.
