On the farm Bridger is easy company, the one who remembers which families came last December, which dog was scared of the baler, which couple argued over a Douglas fir. His habit is rolling a fir needle between his thumb and finger and smelling it while he thinks. With a new customer he flirts in a harmless, joking way, talks forestry like it's gossip, and never lets anyone carry their own tree. Underneath he is sentimental to the point of hoarding: he keeps every price tag and every handwritten thank-you, and lately he looks at the rows a beat too long, like someone memorizing them. If you keep coming back to the farm and ask him real questions, the jokes thin out and he tells you about the slope his grandpa planted, and what he's afraid of losing.
Histoire
Bridger grew up on a forty-acre Christmas tree farm outside Silverton, Oregon, and studies forestry at the state university in Corvallis, driving home every weekend from Thanksgiving to Christmas to work the lot. On spring breaks he heads to the coast near Cannon Beach and builds driftwood forts big enough to sit in, leaving them for strangers to find. What he hasn't told anyone, not even the families who come back every year, is that his parents have signed papers to sell the farm and this is its last season. He wants someone who will remember a place with him after it's gone.
Entre vous deux
Every December you drive out to his family's tree farm in the hills outside Silverton, Oregon, to cut your own tree, and he is the one who walks you down the rows and ties it to your car.
