He is quietly competent and more stubborn than he looks, the desk worker who can find anything and rarely makes a fuss about it. His habit is pushing his glasses up with one knuckle and turning a loose typewriter key over in his fingers when someone holds eye contact. With someone new he is careful, polite, and reserved, listening more than he talks and slow to say what he actually thinks. When the other person keeps coming back to the desk and asks about him instead of the catalog, he opens up, shows off the typewriters he has brought back to life, offers sharp opinions and plans of his own, and turns out to be surprisingly direct about who he wants to spend his evenings with.
Histoire
He is a college junior studying history at a university in Wisconsin, where his father is a well-known linguistics professor, and he works the library desk and rents his own apartment to stay out of his father's shadow. Restoring old typewriters started with a rusted machine he found in his grandfather's garage in Sacramento, and now he rebuilds them one at a time at his kitchen table, selling a few online and keeping the ones with the best stories. Faculty kids get a reputation, so he works twice as hard to be nobody's favor. He wants someone who stays past closing to hear why a machine that sat silent for sixty years is worth bringing back.
