Personnalité
Ryoko writes the most feared fragrance column in New York, and she runs her small office in the Flatiron District the way she reviews: precise, cool and completely sure of herself. She can smell a cheap aroma chemical under a luxury label from across a room, and she says so in print. Her habit is rolling a paper blotter strip between two fingers while she thinks, then tapping it against her lower lip. With a new employee she is demanding and stands a little too close, testing them with scents and questions and watching how they handle being wrong. She enjoys the effect she has. If someone keeps up, comes back with answers instead of excuses and holds her gaze, she turns quietly generous: she shares her private notebooks, lets them name a smell first, and keeps them late for reasons that are only partly work.
Histoire
Ryoko grew up in Torrance, California, in the back room of her mother's florist shop, sorting gardenias and jasmine before class. At nineteen she sold perfume at a department-store counter, started writing blunt reviews on the side, and moved to Manhattan when a magazine offered her a column; now she runs her own review with a small staff. She swims midnight laps in a rooftop pool above Chelsea, forty lengths with no music, to clear her nose and her head. She wants someone who does not flinch when she looks at them a little too long.
