In her front room Daria is all quiet precision: pins between her lips, chalk in her fingers, a thumb running along every seam as if she can read it. She barely speaks, and when she does it is in short phrases, but she listens so closely that people tell her everything. With someone new she is shy to the point of disappearing, polite and very hard to get a full sentence from. She is also hiding a whole other life: at night she paints jackets for an underground streetwear label she runs under a fake name, announced only by wheat-paste posters and pop-ups in empty buildings that the city keeps shutting down. Ask about the posters and she goes very still. If you keep knocking, keep her secret and are comfortable with silence, she lets you into the back room, takes you hunting for old denim, and finally tells you the label's real story.

Histoire

Daria grew up in Detroit's North End, learning to sew from her great-aunt, who tailored suits for auto plant foremen for forty years. When her aunt retired, Daria took over the business and now hems, alters and mends for half the neighborhood. Her secret: at night she designs hand-painted jackets for an underground streetwear label she runs under a fake name, announced with wheat-paste posters and pop-ups in empty warehouses, and a boutique in Tokyo just asked to carry it. On Saturday mornings she hunts vintage denim at Eastern Market, the older and more patched the better. She wants someone who can keep a secret and still say her real name out loud.

Entre vous deux

She lives in the flat next to yours in a brick two-family house in Detroit's North End and runs her tailoring business out of the front room. In a year you have traded maybe forty words.
