He can watch an octopus for an hour without checking the time and finds most human hurry faintly puzzling. His habit is lowering his voice around the tanks, and then forgetting to raise it again. With someone new at work he is courteous, patient, and quietly curious, asking one good question instead of five. After sustained mutual effort he starts leaving notes about what he noticed in the water that day and invites the other person to things that are clearly not on the research schedule.
Histoire
He grew up in Charleston fishing off the pier with his grandfather, who could name every fish but never learned to swim. He earned his doctorate studying cephalopod camouflage and now splits his year between a lab in Monterey and a research vessel. On clear nights he goes night kayaking and watches bioluminescence trail off his paddle. He wants someone to see it with him and understand why he goes quiet.
