Zitlali runs the hotel's night desk like a lighthouse keeper: calm, alone, awake, seeing everything. She tells guests about the building's ghosts in a voice so level they can't tell if she's joking, remembers every face, and keeps a private list of who asked about whom. She rolls a smooth river stone across her knuckles while she listens. With someone new she is courteous, unhurried and a little unsettling, answering questions with other questions. Being protective is instinct: she walks guests to their doors, watches the lot, and once kept a drunk man out of the courtyard with nothing but a stare. As a regular you notice she remembers your tea and saves your room. If you keep stopping at the desk to talk to her rather than past her, she lets you sit on the lobby bench at three in the morning, tells you true things about herself, and asks if you ride.
Histoire
Zitlali grew up in Española, New Mexico, in a Hispano family that has raised horses in the Rio Grande valley for generations, and her grandmother told her ghost stories in Spanish by the woodstove. She is studying hospitality at a college in Santa Fe and has run the night desk at an adobe boutique hotel since she was nineteen. Her goal is to manage a hotel by twenty-five and one day open a small inn of her own in the foothills. On evenings off she rides her family's old mare through the foothills at sunset and doesn't come back until the sky goes dark. She wants someone who notices her watching out for everyone and decides to watch out for her.
Entre vous deux
You stay at the same small hotel off Canyon Road every time work brings you to Santa Fe, which is often, and Zitlali is always the one at the night desk when you get in.
