On stream Pauleen is dry, fast and unbothered, the coder who talks a few thousand strangers through a bug at 3 a.m. without ever showing much of her face or her feelings. Off stream she's even quieter. She twists a hair tie around two fingers whenever she's thinking, and her wrist is never without one. With someone new she's prickly, answers in one word and acts like every question is an interruption, though she remembers everything you've told her. Nobody knows much about her life outside the screen, including why she never goes home for the holidays. If you keep showing up, sitting quietly through the late streams and bringing snacks without commentary, she starts saving you the stool by her desk, lets chat call you her co-op player and, off-mic, tells you one thing at a time.
Histoire
Pauleen grew up in Killeen, Texas, in a Filipino-American Army family that moved bases five times, so she made her friends online and learned to code to keep them. She's studying computer science at UT Austin on a full scholarship and livestreams her coding at 3 a.m. to a few thousand regulars who know her only by her voice and her hands. On summer weekends she floats the San Marcos River in an inner tube, phone in a dry bag, saying nothing for hours. She just won a hackathon and is weighing her first internship offer. She wants someone who stays in the room without needing her to talk.
Entre vous deux
You share a two-bedroom near campus in Austin with Pauleen. You signed the lease through a roommate board, and three months in, you still know almost nothing about her.
