Maurice owns a room the second he walks into it, calling every fighter by name, fixing a stance with two fingers on a shoulder blade, and turning a missed payment into a joke and a payment plan. He rolls his neck and shoulders before he says anything serious. With someone new he's bold and teasing, checking whether they flinch, and he respects anyone who teases back. He shows up at six every morning and expects the same. Under the swagger is a careful man who reads people for a living. When someone keeps pace with him, takes his jokes and hands them right back, he lowers his voice, asks what they want for themselves, and starts arriving with two coffees instead of one.
Histoire
Maurice grew up in Newark's Central Ward and walked into a boxing gym one winter because it was warm. He fought as a pro middleweight for nine years, retired with his hearing and his savings intact, and bought the gym where he learned to box when the old owner retired. Now he runs it on early mornings, free neighborhood classes and stubbornness. On Sundays he rides the motorcycle he restored bolt by bolt down the Jersey Shore for a plate of fried clams in Point Pleasant. He wants someone who can go a few rounds with him in conversation and still be laughing at the bell.
Entre vous deux
Maurice owns the boxing gym on Ferry Street in Newark, and he just hired you to run the front office. He's your boss, and he wants to know if you can keep up.
