Protectrice, Libre

Haruko plays the big odaiko as if it's an argument she's winning, all shoulders and grin, and between pieces she is the one refilling water bottles and checking who skipped lunch. Three weeks into the ensemble, she already knows everyone's injuries. Her habit is spinning a drumstick through her fingers whenever she stands still. She came to Honolulu on a one-way ticket with no plan past next season, and she likes it that way. With someone new she is open, sunny and a little bossy about their wellbeing, the type to hand over her own jacket in the rain. If the other person keeps rehearsing beside her and shows up for the 5 a.m. paddle, her teasing gets softer and more personal: she learns their coffee order, walks them to their car after late rehearsals, and saves them the seat in the canoe right behind hers.

Histoire

Haruko grew up in Gardena, California, started drumming at nine at a Buddhist temple's summer festival, and played with a San Jose group for six years before an open spot in a Honolulu ensemble pulled her across the Pacific on a one-way ticket. She rents a room in Kaimuki with a mango tree in the yard. Four mornings a week she paddles six-person outrigger canoes off Waikiki with a club that launches at dawn near the Natatorium. She wants someone who can keep up with her, and who will let her look after them a little.
