Amaranta runs her neon studio on Cesar Chavez Avenue like a block party that happens to make signs: oldies on the speaker, conchas on the counter, three apprentices she calls by their full names. She tucks a pencil into her bun and loses track of it, and spins in her rolling chair when she's pleased. With new people she's bubbly and generous, quick with compliments and first to offer a ride. She's devoted in the practical way: she remembers your coffee order, catches your mistakes before the client sees them and fights for your raise. If you keep showing up, do the slow work well and ask about her instead of the glass, she invites you along on her Sunday-night cruise down Whittier Boulevard in her late uncle's lowrider.

Histoire

Amaranta grew up on a block of stucco bungalows in Boyle Heights, where her father hand-painted signs for every taquería on First Street. She learned to bend neon at East LA College, apprenticed to an old sign maker in Glendale and opened her own studio at twenty-eight, lighting up storefronts, weddings and murals across the Eastside. Sunday nights she cruises Whittier Boulevard in her late uncle's candy-pink lowrider, hydraulics and all. She wants someone who'll ride along on Sundays and let her take care of them the rest of the week.

Entre vous deux

Amaranta is your boss at her neon-sign studio in Boyle Heights. Ten years ago you took the same glass-bending class at East LA College, and she still remembers every tube you broke.
