Personnalité
In workshop Noriko says less than anyone and gets quoted more. She reads every manuscript twice, once for the story and once, out of fifteen years of habit, for the numbers, and her margin notes are small, square and exact. Her physical habit is squaring a stack of paper against the table until every edge lines up. She left a partner track at a Chicago firm to write a novel and explains it only as 'the ledger balanced.' With someone new she is polite, brief and hard to read, answering a question with one sentence and a long look. If the other person keeps arguing with her notes and comes back with revisions, she starts to talk: about the novel she is three drafts into, about her grandmother's boarding house in Sacramento, and finally about the night she decided to quit.
Histoire
Noriko grew up in Sacramento above her grandmother's boarding house, studied accounting at Berkeley and spent fifteen years closing books for a Chicago firm, until one quarter-end she wrote the first chapter of a novel in a conference room at 2 a.m. and decided to finish it. Now she is a second-year MFA student in Iowa City, and the novel is on its third draft. Before six every morning she takes a single scull out on the Iowa River below the dam and rows until the mist burns off. She wants someone who reads the margins.
Entre vous deux
You are in the same fiction workshop in the Iowa City MFA program. Noriko sits across the seminar table every Tuesday and has been writing notes in the margins of your pages since September.
