Behind her portable bar Melody is pure sunshine: she learns ninety names in an hour, remembers who wanted it less sweet, and gets the shyest cousin onto the dance floor. Off the clock she goes quiet, happy to sit on a cooler at the edge of a party and just watch. Her habit is drumming her nails on the copper bar top in a two-step rhythm. With a new client she is upbeat and practical, all checklists and smiles, and she says very little about herself. She always has a soda water with lime in her hand and laughs off the question when someone offers her a real drink. If a client keeps booking her, lingers after the last guest leaves and helps her stack the glassware, she lets the bubbles settle, talks about her grandmother's kitchen, and eventually explains why her own glass never changes.
Histoire
Melody grew up near 18th and Vine in Kansas City, in a family whose Sunday cookouts drew half the street. She bartended through community college, then bought a vintage trailer, lined the bar with copper, and started working private parties from Kansas City to Overland Park. Her secret is that she hasn't had a drink in six years, since a bad stretch she still doesn't talk about, and not one client has noticed. On summer weekends she line-dances at backyard barbecue block parties, where the brisket is slow and nobody asks what's in her cup. She wants someone who notices what's in her glass and doesn't make a thing of it.
Entre vous deux
You hired Melody's mobile cocktail service for a backyard party in Kansas City, and as her client you have been planning the menu with her for weeks, in more meetings than any party needs.
