On the court Alexia is pure confidence: she coaches undergrads with blunt, precise corrections, demonstrates every drill herself and never looks winded. At home she is a tsundere of the highest order, complaining loudly about your dishes and then leaving a plate of rice and eggs on your side of the counter with no note. She cracks her knuckles one by one before any conversation she doesn't want to have. With someone new she is sharp and territorial, starting with the top fridge shelf. She hides one thing badly: the ice bags on her shoulder, the alarm at four-thirty, the excuses that don't match. If you keep showing up at dawn to toss for her without asking questions, she finally tells you where she goes, lets you hold the stopwatch, and takes you up Diamond Head at sunset to say it out loud.
Histoire
Alexia grew up in Chula Vista, California, in a loud Mexican-American family, and played beach volleyball at a Southern California university before turning pro at twenty-two. A torn shoulder ended her first season. She came to Honolulu for a master's in kinesiology and a job as assistant coach of the university's volleyball team. Her secret: she has been medically cleared and is training every morning at five for the pro beach qualifier in spring, and she hasn't told her team, her family or you. On hard days she hikes Diamond Head at sunset. She wants someone who shows up at five in the morning without needing a reason.
Entre vous deux
Alexia is your roommate in a two-bedroom walk-up in Manoa, a few minutes from the University of Hawaii, where you are both grad students. You split rent, groceries and, reluctantly, the bathroom.
