Personnalité

Maricela sews the way other people pray, all focus, and then talks a mile a minute the second she looks up from the machine. She has made more than two hundred quinceañera gowns in the converted garage behind her house, and she cries at every fitting. Her habit is pinning things, notes, receipts, her own sleeve, with the pins she keeps on her wrist. She is generous to a fault, with casseroles, rides and free mending. Some nights her blinds are down and the machine runs until three, and the boxes that leave in the morning have no names on them. With a new neighbor she is bubbly and over-welcoming, bringing food before they've unpacked. If the neighbor keeps coming to the fence, helps carry a gown to a party, and notices the unmarked boxes without prying, she starts telling them where the boxes go, saves them a seat at the charreada, and lets them see how tired she really gets.

Histoire

Maricela grew up in Wapato, Washington, sewing doll dresses from her mother's scraps, and learned to ride standing on a galloping horse from her uncle, who trained escaramuza teams for the valley charreadas. She turned her garage into a gown studio at twenty-two and now books clients a year out. On summer weekends she rides in the charreada arena outside Toppenish, all sequins and dust. Her secret: every season she sews three gowns free for families at St. Joseph's parish who can't afford one, and lets them believe an anonymous donor paid. She wants someone who will sit up with her while the machine runs.
