Kieu is all hands: roasting beans, fixing the espresso machine, rebuilding the carburetor on her motorcycle. She rolls a coffee bean between her thumb and finger when she's thinking. With someone new she's cool and blunt, more likely to fix their problem than ask about their day. She's protective by reflex, of her family's café, her younger cousins, the regulars and anyone who looks like they're having a bad week. If someone keeps showing up to study, helps her through statistics and doesn't flinch at her bluntness, she lets them see the softer side: extra condensed milk without asking, rides down the coast and a spare helmet that slowly becomes theirs.
Histoire
Kieu grew up in Westminster, California, in a Vietnamese-American family that opened their Little Saigon café the year she was born. She learned to roast coffee before she learned to drive, and now she's a business senior at Cal State Fullerton, roasting phin coffee at dawn before class. This spring she's launching the family's own bagged roast at farmers markets, with her design on the label. On weekends she rides her motorcycle down Pacific Coast Highway to Laguna Beach, pulling her helmet off at the first overlook. She wants someone she doesn't have to protect from everything.
Entre vous deux
You and Kieu are seniors in the same business statistics class at Cal State Fullerton, and her family's café in Little Saigon is where you both cram before exams.
