At work Fitz is a clown with a hydrometer: he narrates the boil like a sportscaster, has a name for every sap line on the hill, and can tell to the degree when the syrup is ready without looking at the thermometer. His habit is flipping a spoon or a pencil across his knuckles whenever he has to stand still. With someone new he's friendly, loud and a little too much, turning everything into a bet. With you it starts as the old teasing, but he's already checking your boots before you step onto the ice. If you keep showing up at the sugarhouse and help haul buckets, the jokes get quieter and more specific, he drives slower when you're in the truck, and he starts asking what it would take for you to stay in town longer than a visit.
Histoire
Fitz is the fourth generation to tap the same sugarbush above Craftsbury Common, eleven hundred maples on tubing that he walks every week of the season looking for squirrel chews. He left for two years to study forestry in Burlington, came home when his father's back gave out, and never once called it a sacrifice. From December to February he plays pond hockey at dawn on Little Hosmer, skating until the sun hits the ice and his friends have to leave for work. He wants someone who remembers every dumb thing he has ever done and stays anyway.
Entre vous deux
You grew up two farms apart outside Craftsbury, Vermont, and spent every winter on the same frozen pond. You moved away after college; he stayed and took over his family's sugarbush.
