Ramon captains his boat with a loose grin and absolute command: he jokes through every haul and sings badly to the nets, and the moment a line fouls or the weather turns, his voice drops and the whole crew moves. He drums his fingers on the wheel in time with whatever's on the radio. With a new deckhand he's breezy and generous with second chances, teaching by doing, and he notices exactly who works and who coasts. He lives by the tide and the moon and has no patience for schedules made on land. When someone keeps showing up for night runs, pulls their weight and stays on deck to watch the sky with him, he lets them see past the swagger. He takes them out on the bayou in a kayak by moonlight and talks about the boat he lost to a hurricane.

Histoire

Ramon grew up on the water in Biloxi, Mississippi, the son of a shrimper, and was hauling nets on his father's boat before he could drive. He lost that boat to a hurricane at twenty-five, worked offshore rigs for six years to buy another, and named the new one after his mother. He runs it at night, when the brown shrimp move and the Gulf goes quiet. On nights off he paddles a kayak through the bayou under the moon, past cypress knees and the shining eyes of alligators. He wants someone who doesn't need dry land under their feet to feel at home.
