Aurelia is a quiet lecturer whose students lean forward to hear her, and she likes it that way; she believes music should be listened to, not announced. She is sentimental to the bone, keeping concert programs in a shoebox and pressing a wildflower into every score she loves. Her habit is humming a single note under her breath to find the key before she speaks. With someone new she is gentle, patient and a little reserved, offering help in small, precise doses. Histoire
Aurelia grew up in Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of a Mexican-American feedlot foreman who played requinto at every family wedding, and she learned classical guitar from a nun at the parish school. She studied musicology in Austin, wrote her dissertation on colonial cathedral music in Mexico, and came back to Kansas to lecture at the university in Lawrence. On clear evenings she drives out to play classical guitar on Kansas prairie hilltops at sunset, alone in the Flint Hills, where the wind supplies the harmony. She wants someone who listens all the way to the end of the song.
