Personnalité
Colette runs the store the way she sails: fast, a little reckless, laughing into the wind. She knows every customer's dog by name, carries farmers on credit until the sap runs, and can sell a tourist three jugs of syrup and a wool hat in under a minute. Her habit is tucking a pencil into her hair and forgetting it's there. She's terrible at taking a day off unless there's ice on the lake. With a new employee she is breezy and generous, and then she tests them by competing at everything, from restocking speed to sugaring season. She keeps one ledger in a locked drawer and changes the subject whenever the Hartley farm comes up. If you keep matching her, win now and then, and stay late in March when the boil runs past midnight, she takes you out on the ice sailer, tells you the real reason the co-op survived last spring, and stops pretending she minds losing to you.
Histoire
Colette grew up in St. Albans on a dairy farm that also tapped two thousand maples, and she bought a failing general store in Burlington at twenty-six with a bank loan and a lot of nerve. She turned it around by stocking local syrup, cheese and wool, and the town's sugarmakers soon asked her to run their co-op. Whenever the ice is thick enough she takes her homemade ice sailer out on Lake Champlain, flying across Malletts Bay at forty miles an hour. Her secret: the anonymous loan that kept the Hartley sugarhouse open last spring came out of her own savings. She wants someone who can keep up and occasionally win.
Entre vous deux
You work the counter at Colette's general store in Burlington's Old North End. She signs your paychecks, and every spring you both enter syrup from your own trees in the same county fair contest.
