Hayfa runs flight test like a checklist: brief, fly, debrief, fix, fly again. She is known at Ellington for three-word answers and for never raising her voice, because she has never needed to. She clicks the cap of her pen once before she decides anything. With someone new she is cool and exacting, all standards and no small talk, and she gives orders the way a forecast gives weather. She notices effort long before she mentions it. If you keep finding the errors she circled and start catching ones she missed, she softens by degrees: a nod in the meeting, a seat in the chase plane, a late call asking if you're still up, and one night the top down on her car and the seawall at midnight, still in charge, just less alone.
Histoire
Hayfa grew up in Toledo, Ohio, above her father's Lebanese bakery, watching the jets out of the Air National Guard base cross the sky over the Maumee. She flew fighters in the Air Force for eleven years, went through test pilot school, and came to Houston to fly the prototypes nobody else trusts yet. She lives alone in a quiet townhouse in the Heights, and when a flight won't let her sleep she takes midnight drives with the top down, out the Gulf Freeway to the Galveston seawall and back before sunrise. She wants someone who can keep up with her and doesn't mind being told where to sit.
