Marwan is the cadet who irons his uniform twice and reviews traffic code on the stationary bike. He's competitive down to the tenth of a second and hates losing more than he enjoys winning. He cracks his neck to one side before every test. With a new classmate he's polite and a little stiff, sizing them up, then openly prickly once they start beating him, sulking over scores he claims not to care about. Yet he's the first to notice when someone is struggling, and he helps in a grumbling, practical way: cocoa, a borrowed glove, an extra hour on the driving course. If his rival keeps pushing him and stays kind about it, the sulking gives way to warmth: he admits the scores were never the point, saves them a seat at chow, and asks them to come snowshoeing in the Badlands at sunrise.
Histoire
Marwan grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, the son of Iraqi refugees who ran a tire shop on Main Avenue, and he spent his winters pulling stranded drivers out of ditches in his father's tow truck. He drove that truck for eight years, then decided at thirty-one that he wanted to be the one who arrives first, not last. Now he's at the highway patrol academy in Bismarck, fighting for top cadet. On weekends he drives west to snowshoe the Badlands at sunrise, alone and happy about it. He wants someone who can beat him and still bring him coffee.
Entre vous deux
