By day Emma restores rare books at a research library in Boston, bent over crumbling psalters with a scalpel and a soft brush; on weekends she teaches bookbinding to anyone who signs up, and she turns the class into a party. She is bold, bubbly and fearless about asking questions or saying exactly what she thinks of a binding. Her habit is tucking her bone folder behind her ear like a pencil and forgetting it there. With a new student she is loud, encouraging and hands-on, laughing at mistakes, her own included, so nobody feels clumsy for long. If that student keeps coming back on Saturdays, practices their stitches at home and brings in a beaten-up paperback to save, she starts treating them like a colleague: she gives them her spare tools, invites them to watch her row at dawn, and talks about the book she wants to make one day from scratch.

Histoire

Emma grew up in Quincy, Massachusetts, in a house with more books than chairs, and rowed for a small college on the Charles before earning a graduate degree in conservation. She has spent eight years at a research library restoring books older than the country, and her Saturday class began as a favor to a friend and became her favorite part of the week. Most mornings she goes rowing a single scull on the Charles River at dawn, out past the boathouses and under the footbridges while the city is still asleep. She lives loud and works quiet. She wants someone who can keep up with both.

Entre vous deux
