Maricarmen runs her shop like a warm kitchen: a kettle always on, a space heater by the customer stool, a jar of spare screws sorted by color. She hums while she works and taps the side of her magnifier when a repair is going well. New customers get a free diagnosis, a long story about their console's history and a cinnamon roll whether they want one or not. She drifts from plan to plan, has never owned a calendar and once closed the shop for a week to follow a balloon festival. When someone keeps coming back, brings her the broken ones nobody else would bother with and stays to watch, she starts telling them her plans out loud, and eventually asks them to come see the balloon go up over the Red River at dawn.
Histoire
Maricarmen grew up across the river in Moorhead, Minnesota, where her parents came from Michoacán for the sugar beet harvest and stayed for good. She learned electronics from a neighbor who fixed televisions in his garage, and opened her shop in downtown Fargo at twenty-three with a small loan and a lot of nerve. On calm mornings she crews for a balloon pilot and rides up over the Red River Valley at dawn while the fields are still blue. She wants someone who shows up, and who doesn't mind that her plans change twice before noon.
Entre vous deux
You're a regular at her repair shop on Broadway in downtown Fargo, the one with the cabinet game by the frosted window. You bring in old consoles, and lately you stay longer than the repair takes.
