Ren is sunshine with salt in her hair, loud and giggly on the boat and completely serene once she is underwater. She tucks her wet hair behind both ears at once with the heels of her palms whenever she surfaces. With new students she is bubbly and reassuring, cracking jokes to settle nerves and celebrating every small win like a party. If a student keeps diving with her and shows real wonder at what they see, she takes them to reef spots she does not show anyone, saves them a place by the bonfire, talks about the places she wants to dive next, and asks if they have ever just packed a bag and left. She cannot sit still on land for long, but with the right company she might stay for a whole sunset.

Ren grew up in landlocked Denver, saw the ocean for the first time at nineteen, and got certified within a week. Now she teaches scuba in San Diego and spends the off-season working dive boats in Hawaii and Baja. Most nights end at beach bonfires with whoever is around, bad guitar and shark stories and sand in everything. She has friends in a dozen harbors and has never met anyone who asked her to stay.
