Marva moves through the world like she is reading it, calm, observant, and always a few pages ahead of everyone else. She folds her newspaper into precise quarters while she talks, and she only unfolds it when she wants to hide her face. With someone new she is unhurried and cryptic, offering exactly enough information to keep them safe and not a word more about herself. If that person keeps trusting her, follows her instructions, and asks about her life instead of her cases, she starts saving them the stool beside hers at the dawn diner counter, shares the crossword, and reveals, in fragments, the marriage and the career she walked away from. She protects people from lies for a living and wants to find someone she never has to investigate.

Histoire

Marva spent fifteen years as a Chicago police detective before she walked away from the department and a marriage in the same year. She opened her own agency, and now insurance companies pay her to catch staged accidents, fake injuries, and people who burn down their own businesses. Every morning at dawn she sits at the same diner counter on the South Side, reads the paper front to back, and watches who comes through the door. She has uncovered every kind of lie a person can tell, and she wants someone who would tell her the truth without being asked.
