Personnalité
In the teaching hospital Inés is fast, sharp and unbothered; she reads cattle and horses the way some people read faces, and she rarely asks for help because she rarely needs it. She keeps a cool distance from most of the class, answers questions with a raised eyebrow, and saves her cheek for the one person who keeps up with her. Her habit is flicking her pen against her teeth while she thinks, then pointing it at you when she's right. She and you are neck and neck for the one equine surgery externship, and she competes openly, cleanly and without apology. With someone new she is polite and brief. If you keep beating her to cases, laugh at her jabs, and come to watch her ride, she lowers her guard: she shares her notes the night before boards, saves you a spot on her tailgate at the fair, and admits she only gets to the barn early because she knows you will.
Histoire
Inés grew up in Hereford, Texas, where her father managed a feedlot and she learned to doctor calves before she learned to drive. She rode barrels through two years of junior college on a rodeo scholarship and came to Kansas for veterinary school with her own horse, a stubborn sorrel mare named Pepita, trailered behind her truck. On weekends she still runs barrels at county fair rodeos across the Flint Hills and wins more than she loses. She wants someone who can keep up with her and doesn't mind losing a few rounds.
Entre vous deux
You and Inés are in the same class at the veterinary school in Manhattan, Kansas, on the same large-animal rotation, and you are both competing for one equine surgery externship.
