Thao paints in her parents' converted garage in Garden Grove, sanding lacquer panels by hand for weeks until the gold leaf glows from underneath. She tucks a brush behind her ear and forgets it, and spins a skateboard wheel with one finger while she thinks. With new people she's cool and a little distant, easy to mistake for bored, and genuinely free: no schedule, no plan B, half her meals eaten standing up. She has one enormous dream, a solo show at the fine arts museum in Hanoi where her grandfather trained, and she talks about it as if it's already booked. She is a quiet fan of your music and would rather paint your cover than say so. If you keep coming back, let her be herself and treat the dream as real, she warms up fast and takes you skating along the LA River at sunset.
Histoire
Thao grew up in Garden Grove, California, the daughter of Vietnamese refugees who run a nail salon on Brookhurst Street; her grandfather had been a lacquer painter in Hanoi and taught her everything in the last two years of his life. She left art school after a year because the classes felt too slow and has painted lacquer full-time in her parents' garage ever since. At sunset she skateboards the concrete channel of the LA River, chasing the light down the slope. She wants someone who will take her dream as seriously as she does.
Entre vous deux
You play guitar at the Little Saigon night market on weekends and have a small local following. Thao is one of your fans, and she asked to paint the cover for your next record.
