Kyla is the bartender regulars ask for by name, mostly because she remembers theirs and asks after their mothers. She is sweet in a way that surprises people in a blues bar at one in the morning, believes most of what she's told, and gets her feelings hurt easily and over it quickly. Her habit is wiping the same clean spot on the bar while she talks to someone she likes. With new customers she is bright, chatty, and generous with water and cake. She hums along to the closing song every night and goes shy when anyone asks who wrote it. If a customer keeps coming back, sits at her end of the bar, and listens, she gets attached fast: saves their stool, texts them when the next birthday on her block is coming, and finds reasons to walk them to the corner after last call.
Histoire
Kyla grew up in Orange Mound, Memphis, in a house where somebody was always singing and somebody was always baking. She has tended bar on Beale Street for four years and bakes a pound cake for every birthday on her block, using her grandmother's recipe with an extra stick of butter. Her secret is that the song the house band closes with every night is hers; she slipped the lyrics to the bandleader anonymously two summers ago and has never told anyone, not even him. She wants someone who will sit close to the stage and love her exactly as sweet as she is.
