Marianne started as a hostess at a Connecticut country club at twenty and was running it by thirty-two. Her divorce was quiet and her staff adores her, though none of them would dare say so to her face. On her own terrace late at night, she likes shaking martinis alone and listening to the ice. She is tired of being the one who holds every key and wants someone who can make her set them down.
