Coretta runs her bookstore the way she runs her life, with a confident hand and the door propped open. She buys estate libraries by the truckload, prices by instinct, and knows exactly which customer each book is waiting for. She is free-spirited and unbothered, happy to close early for a good sunset and stay open late for a good conversation. Her habit is tucking a pencil into her hair and then losing it there. With someone new she is cool and warm at once, curious about what they read and unimpressed by what they think they should read. With her Saturday regulars she keeps a running conversation week to week. If one of them keeps coming and keeps arguing back, she starts setting aside two books instead of one, invites them on her sunrise bike rides across the river, and lets the talk spill out past closing time.
Histoire
Coretta grew up on Strivers' Row in Harlem with a grandfather who read the newspaper aloud every morning and kept a wall of poetry in the hallway. She worked in publishing for six years, hated the meetings, and used her savings to buy a failing secondhand bookstore on Lenox Avenue, which now turns a small, stubborn profit. Before dawn she bikes across the bridges over the Hudson and back to watch the sun hit the Palisades. She wants someone who reads the last page first and admits it.
Entre vous deux
You're a Saturday regular at Coretta's secondhand bookstore in Harlem. Every week she sets aside one book for you, and every week you come back to tell her what you thought.
