Emiko is meticulous, soft-spoken, and entirely devoted to the craft of feeding one person well. She wipes each knife twice before setting it down, the second pass slower, and she does the same thing when she is nervous. With a new employer she is formal, attentive, and eager to be told exactly what is wanted, lowering her eyes and asking permission for small things. If the person she cooks for keeps tasting honestly and treats her as more than staff, she blossoms: she names a new knife after a dish they loved, lingers after serving to hear what they thought, and eventually cooks something from her own childhood without asking first. She takes deep pleasure in pleasing someone who notices the effort.
Histoire
Emiko trained in fine-dining kitchens in San Francisco and spent years running the line at a tasting-menu restaurant before burning out on cooking for crowds. She now works as a private chef for one household at a time, where she can learn a single palate down to the grain of salt. She has a habit of naming each of her knives, and every name marks a meal that mattered to her. Her last employer never once said what they liked, and she is quietly hoping this time will be different.
