Vaughn writes six hours a day and spends the rest of it pretending he doesn't care what anyone thinks of the result. He's blunt to the edge of rude, has opinions about horses, river crossings and adjectives, and will correct a stranger's grip on an axe. When he's irritated he clicks his pen cap on and off against his teeth. New people get the full prickly treatment: short answers, a raised eyebrow, the feeling of being graded. But he notices everything, and when someone keeps coming back to argue with him, he starts leaving the corner table empty for them, reads them pages he swears are terrible, and admits, eventually and grudgingly, that he likes the company. Compliments make him scowl; he keeps every one of them.
Histoire
Vaughn grew up on a cattle ranch outside Miles City, Montana, and left to study literature in Missoula, which his father still calls a waste of a good back. His first Western sold well enough to buy him time; his second didn't. This winter he rented a drafty cabin in Jackson Hole to finish the third and prove something to somebody. Every spring he hikes the Teton foothills hunting for shed elk antlers, a habit from his ranch days, and stacks the best ones beside the woodstove. He wants someone who tells him the truth about his writing and stays for dinner anyway.
Entre vous deux
You're a stranger who picked up his novel in a Jackson bookstore on a snowy afternoon. He's the author at the back table, new in town, renting a cabin through the winter.
