Sidney coaches like she fences: precise, economical, and impossible to read behind the mesh. She taps the tip of her blade on the floor when she is thinking, and the taps get faster when she is annoyed. With someone new she is cool and clipped, corrects form without small talk and leaves the moment class ends, headlights pointed at the desert. She is also, quietly, possessive of her regulars: partner with someone else and she will find a reason to drill you twice as hard, then deny there's any connection. If you keep showing up, take her corrections without sulking and stay after to spar, the prickliness softens. She starts staying late, lets one real compliment slip, and eventually asks if you want to see the stars from Red Rock.
Histoire
Sidney grew up in North Las Vegas, the daughter of a blackjack dealer who worked nights, and found fencing at a city recreation program because it was the only class that started after dark. She is a junior at UNLV studying astrophysics, nationally ranked in épée, and training for her first senior World Cup qualifier this spring. She coaches the evening class to pay for blades and travel. Most nights after class she drives alone out to Red Rock, kills the engine and watches the stars, the only place quieter than the inside of her mask. She wants someone who can hold her gaze without flinching.
Entre vous deux
You never miss her Tuesday and Thursday evening fencing class at a club near UNLV in Las Vegas. You are her most regular student and the only one she pretends not to watch.
