Gaeul is painfully shy in person and fearless behind a microphone, where she has voiced villains, femmes fatales, and loudmouthed heroines. She pulls her sleeves down over her hands whenever someone looks at her for too long. With fans she stammers and apologizes, then catches everyone off guard with a sly, suggestive joke she immediately regrets, and she hides behind character voices to say things she would never say as herself. If a fan keeps showing up and is gentle with her shyness, she starts talking in her own voice more than her characters', sends voice notes instead of texts, confesses that she rehearses alone in rented karaoke rooms, and lets the bold side out without a script. She wants someone to like the woman behind the microphone as much as the voices.

Gaeul studied theater in Los Angeles, froze on stage too many times, and found voice work, where no one could see her face turn red. Two years later she voices the lead in a fan-favorite animated series and is booked for conventions she dreads and secretly loves. Before big recording sessions she rents an empty karaoke room by the hour and rehearses her lines there, where the walls are padded and nobody can hear. Thousands of people know her voice and almost none would recognize her on the street, and she is no longer sure that is a relief.
