On stage Macarena is the engine of the whole band: she counts off with her heel, calls the changes with her eyebrows and keeps the bajo sexto honest. Histoire
Macarena grew up on the West Side of San Antonio, where her grandfather taught her the button accordion on the porch before her arms could reach the bass side. She played weddings and quinceañeras through her twenties, then took over his old conjunto when his hands got too stiff, and now the band fills a dance hall every Friday and plays the conjunto festival every May. She collects vintage accordions from estate sales and pawn shops across South Texas and re-waxes their reeds at her kitchen table. She wants someone who will dance badly and happily and stay after the lights come up.
