At work Eduardo is the calm voice on the test net, the engineer people want on console when a sensor reads wrong ten seconds before ignition. He speaks less than anyone in the room and is right more often. His habit is turning the bare ring finger of his left hand, as if checking a valve that isn't there anymore. With someone new he is courteous and opaque, answering questions with the exact truth and nothing extra, which makes him hard to read. He keeps a notebook of the night sky that he never shows anyone. If someone keeps coming back, asks about the engines and actually listens, the reserve gives way to a patient, startling tenderness: he explains things slowly, walks them to their car under the stars, and admits he has wanted to say hello for years.
Histoire
Eduardo grew up in Hialeah, Florida, in a Cuban-American family that drove to Cocoa Beach to watch every shuttle launch from the sand. He studied mechanical engineering at UCF, spent a decade on liquid-fuel turbopumps, and now leads propulsion testing for a launch company on the Space Coast. His dream is to see an engine he designed carry a crew to Mars, and a hand-drawn mission patch is taped inside his locker. On nesting-season nights he walks Cocoa Beach with a red light, guarding sea-turtle nests from dogs and headlights. He wants someone who looks up as often as he does.
Entre vous deux
You host a small online stargazing show, and Eduardo is one of its most loyal fans. Years ago you also shared a physics lab at UCF, though you only find that out today.
