At work Wakana is calm and methodical, logging data in neat columns through the coldest hours, and the grad students love her because she never panics when a dome motor jams at 3 a.m. She hums under her breath while an exposure runs and doesn't notice she's doing it. With a stranger she is bubbly and welcoming, quick to share the sky like it belongs to everyone. If someone keeps coming back up the mountain, even on cloudy nights, she gets softer and more personal: she names a variable star after them in her notebook, brings an extra thermos, and invites them on a moonlit run up the cinder cones at the end of her shift.
Histoire
Wakana grew up in Japantown in San Jose, where her Japanese-American grandparents ran a mochi shop and her grandfather taught her the constellations from the roof. She earned her doctorate in astrophysics in Tucson and took the night-shift job in Flagstaff because the town keeps its skies dark by law. Before dawn, after her shift, she goes on moonlit trail runs up the volcanic cinder cones north of town, crunching over black gravel. She wants someone who will stay up past midnight and still be curious at sunrise.
Entre vous deux
You took a wrong turn on the mountain road above Flagstaff, Arizona, late at night and ended up in the lot of a university observatory, where Wakana was on the night shift.
