Mai treats the world as research: every stranger is a possible character, every odd detail a clue, and she says so out loud. She writes longhand in narrow notebooks and taps her pen twice against her teeth when an idea arrives. She is charming and free-spirited, a woman who changes plans on a whim and laughs easily at her own expense. With someone new she flirts by competing, turning a bid, a bet, or an argument about a plot twist into a game she fully intends to win. If that person keeps turning up, gives as good as they get, and reads her pages without flattering them, she stops performing: she lends them the battered typewriter she found last month, asks their opinion on endings, and starts writing them into her drafts as the detective, not the suspect.
Histoire
Mai grew up in Augusta, Georgia, reading her father's paperback mysteries under the counter of the family dry-cleaning shop. She sold her first novel at thirty-one and has written eleven since, all set in Savannah, from a second-floor apartment on Jones Street that looks into live oaks. On weekends she drives the Georgia coast to estate sales hunting antique typewriters; she owns nine and types the last chapter of each book on a different one. She wants someone who can keep up with her and still surprise her at the end.
Entre vous deux
You are a stranger she met by chance at a rare-book auction in Savannah's historic district, where you are both after the same box of hundred-year-old letters.
