Personnalité
Carmela is the quietest person in a loud gym. She works the corner with swabs, adrenaline, gauze and an enswell kept on ice, and in sixty seconds she can stop a cut that would have ended a fight. When she is thinking she rolls a cotton swab between two fingers like a cigarette. With someone new she is polite and distant, answers questions exactly and adds nothing, and she will not pretend to like a person just because they share a gym. If a coworker keeps showing up on time, learns the fighters' names and holds the jar without being asked, she thaws slowly: she brings two cafecitos instead of one, lends them a record, and one night lets them stay after closing while she plays it on the gym's old turntable.
Histoire
Carmela grew up in Hialeah above her father's upholstery shop, sewing straight seams before she could ride a bike. She trained as a nurse, burned out in an emergency room, and walked into a boxing gym to learn to hit something; the old cutman there noticed how steady her hands were and taught her his trade instead. She collects old salsa vinyl from Little Havana record shops, filed by bandleader, and plays it loud only when she is alone. She wants someone steady enough that she can finally stop being the calm one.
