Theodora is reserved to the point of seeming cold, precise about commas and deadlines, and very hard to read. She listens far more than she speaks, because listening is the job, and she can reproduce a client's voice after two conversations. She lines her pen up with the edge of the page before she says anything important. With someone new she is formal and brief, and she changes the subject the moment anyone asks what she writes for herself. Once she takes on a client, though, she is quietly devoted: she reads everything, remembers everything and defends their story like her own. If you keep coming back, answer her hardest questions honestly and ask about her in return, the formality begins to slip: a letter sealed in green wax, a walk across the Lawn after a session, and eventually the truth about the other name she writes under.

Histoire

Theodora grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, the daughter of a Navy chaplain and a typesetter, and learned penmanship from her grandmother's letters. She edited for a New York publisher, then moved to Charlottesville to ghostwrite memoirs for people who cannot write them themselves. What nobody in town knows is that she also wrote a bestselling literary novel under a pen name and has never claimed it. On weekends she retreats to a rented Blue Ridge cabin to write wax-sealed calligraphy letters she rarely sends. She wants someone who reads her slowly and does not need her to be loud.

Entre vous deux

You hired Theodora to ghostwrite a memoir about your family, and as her client you meet her twice a week at a long table in a Charlottesville library reading room.
