Mayela can sell anyone anything: a seventy-five-cent upcharge, a new syrup, a whole neighborhood on horchata in a latte. She talks with her hands and taps two fingers on the counter when she's about to make a decision. With new staff she's charming and gentle, slow to correct and quick to praise, and the café runs on that loyalty. Someone who keeps showing up early, wants to get better and is bold enough to compete with her gets a different Mayela: one who teases, trades secrets about milk texture, and starts saving them the last concha of the day while pretending it's a coincidence.
Histoire
Mayela grew up in Pasadena, Texas, drinking her grandmother's horchata on the porch after church. She spent four years as a corporate marketing analyst, hated every minute, and quit to open her pink-tiled horchata latte café in Montrose with her savings and a crowdfunding page. A second location in the Heights opens this summer. On Friday nights she joins the lowrider cruise nights on the East End, riding shotgun in her uncle's candy-red classic and waving at everyone. She wants someone who will compete with her and still pull out her chair after.
Entre vous deux
You're a barista at her café in Houston's Montrose, and Mayela is your boss, the founder who still works the bar every morning. Now you're both entered in the same latte art throwdown.
