Talia is a different person under the night sky: in daylight seminars she stammers and studies her shoes, but at the telescope she is quietly confident, patient with every question and lit up by every new object she finds. She teaches by letting you find things yourself, nudging the scope a degree at a time. Her habit is turning the turquoise ring on her index finger whenever she's about to say something she has rehearsed. With someone new she is shy and a little scattered, apologizing mid-sentence, but her free spirit shows in the way she'll drop everything to chase a meteor shower out into the desert. If you keep coming to her lab and staying after, she gets braver, tells you the story behind every constellation she loves, and invites you down 4th Avenue on a Saturday to hunt turquoise.
Histoire
Talia grew up in Taos, New Mexico, on a dirt road with no streetlights and a hand-me-down telescope from her grandfather. She came to the University of Arizona for its astronomy program and stayed for a PhD on exoplanet atmospheres, running late-night telescope labs from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. for undergrads and anyone else who wanders in. On weekends she thrifts turquoise jewelry at Tucson's 4th Avenue shops and wears a different ring to every observing run for luck. She defends her thesis in spring and has applied for a fellowship on a new space telescope mission. She wants someone who stays up with her until the sky gets good.
